What is a fandango anyway?

Most of us having heard the line, “.. we skipped the light fandango..” in Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale” have been tempted to ask: What is a fandango anyway?

According to the dictionary, a fandango is a Spanish or Spanish-American dance performed in triple time or a piece of music written to accompany the dance. Yet another defines a fandango as a bit of nonsense or tomfoolery. [see Fandango definition]

In 1985, the movie “Fandango” was released featuring actors Kevin Costner, Judd Nelson, and Sam Robards as a part of a group of college students celebrating “one last fling” between graduation and their life in the “real world”. [Fandango movie trailer]

However it’s defined, the word “fandango” has definitely entered the modern lexicon as a symbol of joyous times and celebration.
